Racing stripes with vinyl

Racing stripes, the two parallel bands that run the length of the car, are a classic of American muscle cars and race cars. With vinyl you make them yourself, in the width and colour you want, and take them off when you get bored. The most striking combinations are contrasting ones: black on white, white on blue or red, or carbon on any colour.

How to design them

The usual layout is two bands 20 to 25 cm wide, 5 to 10 cm apart, running over the bonnet, roof and boot. Mark the centre line of the car with masking tape and measure from there so they're symmetrical.

How much do you need?

You can cut several strips lengthways from the 152 cm roll. For two stripes over the bonnet, roof and boot of a car, the run is about 4.5 m: a 5 m roll gives you both stripes cut lengthways, or 3 m if it's just the bonnet and roof. That way there are no joins in the middle of a stripe.

The knifeless tape trick

For perfect edges without running a blade over the paint, use knifeless tape: lay the tape along the line, apply the vinyl over it and, when you pull the filament, the film is cut with a clean edge.

Frequently asked questions

How much vinyl do I need for stripes?

For the bonnet, roof and boot of a car, a 5 m roll cut lengthways gives you both stripes with no joins. Just the bonnet and roof, 3 m.

How wide should the stripes be?

Most commonly 20 to 25 cm each, with a 5 to 10 cm gap. On small cars, a little narrower.

How do I get them straight?

Mark the centre line of the car with masking tape, measure from there and use knifeless tape for the edges. That way they're straight and symmetrical.

Are racing stripes legal?

Yes. Stripes don't change the main colour of the car, so there's nothing to report.
