Chrome delete: goodbye chrome

Chrome delete means covering a car's chrome trim with black vinyl: the window surrounds, the pillars, the side strips and sometimes the grille. It's what factory sports trims do, and with vinyl it costs very little. The most used film is gloss black, which gives the "black line" look of high-end models; matte black looks more aggressive.

Which parts?

  • Chrome window surrounds.
  • B and C pillars (between the doors and behind).
  • Side and bumper strips.
  • Badges and grille: see grille and badges.

How much do you need?

The trims are narrow, so you cut strips from a piece of roll. For the window surrounds of a 4-door car, 50 cm or 75 cm is enough. If you're doing the pillars too, 1 m.

How it's done

Clean the chrome well with alcohol, cut strips about 2 cm wider than the trim, apply dry and press down with the squeegee. Warm the edges and tuck them under the rubber seals with a card or the squeegee itself. Trim the excess with a sharp cutter, without pressing on the rubber.

Frequently asked questions

What is chrome delete?

It's covering a car's chrome with vinyl, usually black, to give it a more modern, sporty look, like the "black line" or "shadow line" factory trims.

Gloss black or matte black?

Gloss black is closest to factory finishes and goes with black roofs and wing mirrors. Matte black looks more aggressive, but shows dirt more.

How long does it last?

Several years. The window trims take a beating from the glass going up and down, so it's important to tuck the edges well under the seals.

Is it legal?

Yes. Changing the colour of trims and strips doesn't change the colour of the car, so there's nothing to report.
